Myanmar Higher Education Policy

Abstract

Myanmar higher education policy, administration structure, national education committee and prioritized tasks for upgrading education are presented. The first seminars to promote higher education subsector were held in 1997 and the 30-year Long-term Education Development Plan with 36 programmes for higher education subsector have been implemented since 2001-2002 to face the challenges of the Knowledge Age. The implementation of the accessibility, quality and diversity in higher education and human resource development programmes to promote qualified human resource are discussed.

1. Introduction

The Ministry of Education is the main provider of education in the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and is functioning with the visionto create an education system that will generate a learning society capable of facing the challenges of the Knowledge Age.The Ministry of Education is implementing short and long-term education development plans to develop a lifelong learning society. The implementation of the education development plan has not only brought about the enhancement of the quality of higher education and promoted diversity, but it has also markedly increased accessibility to higher education.
